Do you know that a normal sleep cycle consists of alternating periods of 2 main phases of sleep- NREM and REM sleep, with each cycle lasting about 90-120 minutes? A complete full sleep cycle is essential for overall health and well-being, including physical restoration and repair, cognition, mood and emotions, energy restoration, immune system as well as hormones regulation. Let’s understand more about the different phases of sleep cycle and the importance of maintaining a healthy sleep wake cycle.

A normal sleep cycle consists of alternating periods of non-rapid eye movement (NREM) sleep and rapid eye movement (REM) sleep, each lasting for about 1.5 to 2 hours. Throughout the night, one usually go through multiple cycles of sleep, each characterized by distinct stages. NREM sleep consists of 3 stages: N1, N2 and N3. These stages represent progressively deeper levels of sleep.

  1. Stage N1 (Transition to sleep)
  • This stage marks the transition from wakefulness to sleep.
  • It is a light sleep stage where one may experience drifting in and out of consciousness.
  • Brain waves slow down (theta waves) and muscle activity starts to reduce.
  • This stage lasts for a few minutes.
  1. Stage N2 (Light sleep)
  • This is a deeper stage of sleep compared to N1.
  • Brain waves continue to slow slow, with occasional bursts of rapid brain activity known as sleep spindles and K-complexes (sharp waves) may occur.
  • Eye movements stop, and heart rate and body temperature decrease.
  • This stage constitutes the majority of a typical night’s sleep.
  1. Stage N3 (Deep sleep)
  • Deepest stage of NREM sleep.
  • Delta waves, which are slow brain waves, dominate this stage.
  • Characterized by deepest relaxation and restoration of the body.
  • Hardest stage to wake someone up, if awakened, one may feel groggy or disoriented.
  1. REM sleep (Dream sleep)
  • Characterized by rapid eye movements, vivid dreaming and muscle paralysis except eye and breathing muscles
  • Brain activity at this stage resembles wakefulness
  • Heart rate and blood pressure increase, and breathing becomes more irregular
  • This stage is important for cognitive function, memory consolidation and emotional regulation

Your sleep will cycle through REM and NREM sleep several times during a typical night, with increasingly longer, deeper REM towards morning. All single stage is essential for a good sleep quality and for your health.
